Architectural Millwork

As with the rest of our work, we can collaborate with you to create the ideal design for the millwork details of your home. This can be as complex as a whole house full of floor-to-ceiling raised paneling, or as simple as a homeowner who prefers a nice deep crown moulding to the one you would get from the warehouse home improvement store. Since everything we make is custom, we will create the piece you want for your home. Or we will match what already exists in your home if it needs replacing or you are putting on an addition.

Late-Georgian Period Room We manufactured all the millwork pictured in this late-Georgian period room. The fireplace surround features fluted pilasters, carved detail, dentil and undercrown moulding, a cove and bead mantle top, and an applied over-mantle painting. The seven step moulding system at the top of the wall features modillions, more dentil work, and a 3 1 / 2 ” crown moulding. Along the same wall as the fireplace, floor-to-ceiling hand-planed raised paneling was made to match the closet door at the far end of the room. Maurer and Shepherd wrapped the summer beam across the ceiling with raised paneling and crown moulding. The window seat features a top-accessible storage area, and raised panel shutters. A very typical interior casing, a simple 1 / 2 ” bead with a mitered back band, surrounds the window. The far wall has a 33” tall raised panel wainscoting and chair rail. Each corner by the dining room
table has a cockle shell corner cabinet.

Late-Georgian Period Room with 2 Cockle Shell Cabinets
The cockle shell corner cabinets are called such because of the hand carved half-round cockle shell that is visible when the cabinet door is open. The door features true divided lights with reclaimed antique cylinder glass. The fluted pilasters with hand-carved rosettes visible on the exterior of the cabinet are mimicked on the interior, with smaller rosettes and fluted pilasters with reeds. The paneled doors below have true carved tombstone panels. This is only one type of corner cabinet that we make. The addition or subtraction of details can change the look from a plain corner cabinet to a highly elaborate Georgian style, like the one pictured.

At Maurer and Shepherd we carry a large array of period correct mouldings, including different size crown and undercrown mouldings, asymmetrical and symmetrical bolection moldings, and a bead and ogee band moulding. We can also manufacture any type of custom moulding from our various cutters, or from a custom made cutter. We make everything from exterior mouldings and trim boards, to custom mantles and built-in bookcases. Our paneling is all hand-planed and fastened with wooden pegs and can be made to fit any space including along the rise of a stairway or on the wall under the stairs. In addition to raised paneling, we manufacture shadow molded boards , beaded boards and feather-edge boards . We also make wide pine flooring using furniture grade Eastern white pine. As is the case with all our raised paneling and sheathing boards, the wide pine flooring is hand-planed.
